Modern paintings can involve shapes and bright colors, and it's easy to make one. Staying in the lines while painting shapes is the most essential part of your painting. If you're having trouble, let each color dry before moving on to the next.

You Will Need

  • Acrylic paint in yellow, purple, turquoise, red, orange, blue, dark green, light green, and pink
  • Canvas or paper made for acrylic paints
  • Paint brushes
  • Painting palette
  • Water
  • Napkin or cloth (to wipe your brush)

Instructions

  1. For this type of painting, you will draw a few wiggly lines from each side of your canvas to the another. You can make as many or as few lines as you want to paint, and you can use any color scheme you like. Using opposite colors on the color wheel will make your colors really pop. If you want something else, the possibilities are endless.
  2. Start by choosing your opposing colors, such as yellow and purple, orange and blue, pink and light green, red and dark green.
  3. Paint your opposing colors next to each other as best you can, making sure to stay inside the lines. This is very important.

Painting with watercolors can result in creative endeavours you never thought you could accomplish. Painting a sunset is easy to do with watercolors because in this medium, it is easy to blend your colors. When you do not want your colors to blend, simply let the painting dry before continuing.

You Will Need

  • Watercolor paint in yellow, orange, red, and black
  • Watercolor paper
  • Paint brushes
  • Painting palette
  • Water
  • Napkin or cloth (to wipe your brush)

Instructions

  1. Spray your watercolor paper with a soft mist of water.
  2. Start with the yellow in the middle of your page, making a circle with your brush.
  3. Using a clean brush, follow with the orange staying to the outside of the yellow, making sure the two colors merge and blend nicely.
  4. With a clean brush, add red to the outside of your orange all the way to the edges of your paper. Let it dry.
  5. Using black, draw your crazy branches making sure they wiggle wherever they go. Leave room for a centering of your birds. You can even draw your main branch with your birds first and draw the other branches around them.
  6. Place your two birds together in the middle of your light.

Ocean and Sky Oil Painting

Oil paints are fun to use, and the colors are always vibrant. Painting an ocean scene against the backdrop of the sky is easy. Using oil paints does have special instructions for cleaning and allowing the canvas to dry, but it really doesn't have to be difficult. If you plan to use your brushes for more oil painting, wrap them in foil and place them in the freezer. Otherwise, soak them in dish soap and wipe the brushes on a paper towel until they come clean.

You Will Need

  • Oil paint in white, light blue, dark blue, and black
  • Canvas or paper made for oils
  • Paint brushes
  • Painting palette
  • Napkin or cloth (to wipe your brush)

Instructions

  1. Using clean brushes, start by painting the bottom half dark blue and the top half light blue. There's no need to let the paint dry before moving on to the next step.
  2. On your palette, add a squeeze of white next to your dark blue and mix lightly with your brush, allowing some of the white to show through.
  3. Add your newly mixed paint to the canvas, painting generously across the dark blue ocean and playing with how the white naturally creates a turbulent ocean.
  4. Once you like your ocean, move to the sky. Again, add a squeeze of white next to the light blue on your palette and mix, leaving large bits of white showing.
  5. Add paint generously to the canvas with your brush. Make sure there is a clear distinction between the sky and ocean.
  6. Now, using black and a small brush, paint an upside down arch for the boat.
  7. Using the white and your small brush, paint in a straight line and arch for the sail.
  8. Let the painting dry in a safe place for about six months so the oils have time to cure.

Red Rose Acrylic Painting

Painting roses can be easy when using lights and darks together. Having an image to look at as you draw your rose can help you discover where the rose should have its lights and darks. What makes it easy to paint is that all roses are different, and whatever you end up with will be perfect.

You Will Need

  • Acrylic paint in light and dark red, white, and green
  • Canvas or paper made for acrylic painting
  • Paint brushes
  • Painting palette
  • Water
  • Napkin or cloth (to wipe your brush)

Instructions

  1. Start by painting your entire canvas a light red.
  2. Use your brush in a circling fashion, using dark red for the center and making natural edges.
  3. Using the light red, create three medium-sized petals of different shapes and sizes, encircling the center.
  4. Using the dark red, create four larger petals to encircle these petals.
  5. Lastly, using light red, create three to four outside petals of different shapes and sizes. The basic shape of your rose is here.
  6. Now you need to use shading to create the illusion of depth. On the petals with light red, use the darker red at the bottom of the petals, brushing up towards the middle.
  7. With the darker petals, use the light red from the middle to top of the petal. Create a balance that feels right to you. Sometimes looking at your rose from a distance will help.
  8. Now, add white to one side of the rose, to the edges of your petals only, giving the illusion of sunlight hitting the flower.
