Oil paints are fun to use, and the colors are always vibrant. Painting an ocean scene against the backdrop of the sky is easy. Using oil paints does have special instructions for cleaning and allowing the canvas to dry, but it really doesn't have to be difficult. If you plan to use your brushes for more oil painting, wrap them in foil and place them in the freezer. Otherwise, soak them in dish soap and wipe the brushes on a paper towel until they come clean.
You Will Need
- Oil paint in white, light blue, dark blue, and black
- Canvas or paper made for oils
- Paint brushes
- Painting palette
- Napkin or cloth (to wipe your brush)
Instructions
- Using clean brushes, start by painting the bottom half dark blue and the top half light blue. There's no need to let the paint dry before moving on to the next step.
- On your palette, add a squeeze of white next to your dark blue and mix lightly with your brush, allowing some of the white to show through.
- Add your newly mixed paint to the canvas, painting generously across the dark blue ocean and playing with how the white naturally creates a turbulent ocean.
- Once you like your ocean, move to the sky. Again, add a squeeze of white next to the light blue on your palette and mix, leaving large bits of white showing.
- Add paint generously to the canvas with your brush. Make sure there is a clear distinction between the sky and ocean.
- Now, using black and a small brush, paint an upside down arch for the boat.
- Using the white and your small brush, paint in a straight line and arch for the sail.
- Let the painting dry in a safe place for about six months so the oils have time to cure.
