Lace Snowflake Decoration
This beautiful lace snowflake takes only a few minutes to make. You'll need flat lace with a strong triangular motif; there are lots of great options at your local fabric store. When this sweet snowflake is done, you'll have a stunning decoration to scatter on tabletops or hang from your tree. You can also use it as an embellishment to add to pillows, Christmas stockings, clothing, table linens, or any other item. For a fun look, sew a pin to the back to make a gorgeous snowflake brooch.
Supplies
- Quarter yard of flat lace
- Sharp scissors or thread cutters
- White thread
- Hand sewing needle
Instructions
- Spread the lace out on your work surface. Count out six triangular points and cut the lace at this location, keeping your scissors close to the design. Trim the other end the same way, snipping off any loose or extra pieces near the design.
- Use the scissors to cut between the points of the lace, snipping along the next row of the design without actually cutting any pieces off of the lace. How you do this will depend on the design of the lace you purchased.
- Thread your needle with a double length of thread. Carefully sew the ends of the lace together to form a loop, matching the pattern up. Knot the end when you're done.
- Knot your thread again and take long stitches right at the upper edge of the lace, continuing all the way around the loop.
- When you reach the place you started sewing, pull the thread to gather the lace as tightly as possible. Knot off the thread and admire your snowflake.
Snowflake Princess Pendant
You can create this sparkling snowflake pendant for yourself or for another special person in your life. It's easy to make and doesn't require a lot of previous jewelry making experience. You can find the chandelier crystal for this craft at thrift stores, antique shops, and craft stores.
Supplies
- White pearlized oven-baked clay, such as Sculpey
- Rubber stamp with snowflake design
- Craft wire
- Chandelier crystal
- Safety pin
- Wire cutters and pliers
- Waxed paper and aluminum foil
- Baking sheet
Instructions
- Place a piece of waxed paper on your work surface to protect it. Put a piece of aluminum foil on the baking sheet. Preheat your oven according to the instructions on the clay.
- Break off a small piece of the clay, about the size of large blueberry. Work the clay with your hands for a bit to soften it. When it no longer feels crumbly, roll it between your palms to create a ball. Put the ball on the waxed paper and continue rolling until it is perfectly round.
- Fold the waxed paper over the ball and gently push down to create a flat disc. Unfold the paper and pick up the disc. Place it flat side up on the aluminum foil.
- Gently press the snowflake stamp down into the center of the clay disc. Wiggle it gently to make sure the design is apparent. Lift the stamp and set it aside. Use a safety pin to create two holes, one at the top and the other at the bottom of the disc. Work the pin around the hole to make it large enough for your craft wire.
- Bake the clay according to the package instructions. Allow it to cool completely before proceeding.
- Cut a small piece of craft wire and insert it through one of the holes you made in the clay disc. Wrap the wire back on itself to create a hanging loop. Trim the ends carefully.
- Use another piece of wire to hang a chandelier crystal from the other hole on the disc. Be sure to trim any sharp wire ends.
- String the pendant on your favorite chain using the hanging loop, and enjoy!
Snowflake Baby Handprint
This fun project is a great way to introduce your baby to crafting, and it also makes a wonderful keepsake. Be sure to write the date on it when you're done.
Supplies
- Light blue construction paper
- White and blue tempera paint
- Blue glitter glue
- Paper plate
- Scissors
Instructions
- Cut the paper into a square. Squirt some of the tempera paint on the paper plate. You can use mostly white and some blue or choose your own mix of colors.
- Undress your baby to keep his or her clothing from getting paint on it. Dip his or her hand into the paint, making sure the paint is on all five fingers. Press the baby's hand onto the paper.
- Turn the paper slightly. Dip his or her hand again, and create another print with the palm overlapping but the fingers not overlapping. Create a third handprint the same way. Allow the paint to dry.
- After the paint is dry, use the glitter glue to draw a snowflake in the center of the prints. Do this by drawing a straight line down and then making an X on top of that. Add small lines to give it a delicate snowflake appearance. Allow the glue to dry before hanging.
