When you're first learning crochet, chances are that one of your early projects will be a scarf. If you're feeling ready to branch out and master new stitches and techniques, free patterns can be a valuable resource. Save your money to put towards beautiful yarn instead! Try this original, easy pattern for a crocheted Honeycomb Scarf, which will keep you warm and cozy.
Honeycomb Scarf Pattern
This scarf is easier to make than it might look; the only stitches you need to know are chain, double crochet, and the occasional single crochet.
- To begin, chain 23 stitches. Then work through each of the following as directed:
- Foundation row: Sc in the second chain from your hook. Work 1 sc in each chain until the end of the row. Chain 3 and turn.
- Row 1: Skip 1 sc. Work 1 dc in the next sc, then chain 2 and work another dc in the same stitch. This is known as a V stitch. Continue V-stitching until the last 2 sc, then skip 1 sc and do 1 dc in the last sc. Chain 3 and turn.
- Row 2: Skip 1 sc. V-stitch under the chain-2 from the previous row; in other words, work the V-stitch through the opening in the "V" stitch directly below it. The arrows in the image below indicate where you should work the stitches (there are 7 Vs in each row). Work 1 dc in the turning chain from the previous row (see next image below). Chain 3 and turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the scarf is as long as you like. At the end of the last row, chain 1 and turn.
- Ending row: Sc in the first dc. (Work 2 sc underneath the chain-2 from the first V stitch, then work 1 sc in the next dc.) Repeat everything within () until you read the end of the row. Work 1 sc in the final dc.
- Finishing: Clip the yarn and draw the tail end through the last loop on the hook. Use a yarn needle or your crochet hook to weave the tail ends of the yarn into the scarf.
