Granny Squares Are Easy

When you know how to crochet a granny square, you can make numerous projects from scarves to afghans. They are very easy to make as long as you know how to chain and double crochet.

An added benefit is that granny squares can be crocheted without a gauge, making them a great beginner project.

How to Crochet a Granny Square

First, you will need to chain 6.

  1. Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
  2. Now, chain 3. This chain 3 is counted as the first double crochet.

Step Two

  1. Yarn over.
  2. Insert hook in the center of ring, pull up a loop. Pull the yarn through two loops.
  3. Yarn over and pull through the remaining loops on hook.
  4. Make 14 more double crochet stitches in a ring and slip stitch into the second chain of the chain two.

Step Three

You can change colors at this point if you wish.

  1. Chain three. Put the hook through the space below and make a double crochet. Chain two.
  2. Count four stitches and insert the hook in the next space.
  3. Two double crochet, chain two, and then two double crochet.

One corner is made.

Finish the Corners

  1. Chain two and repeat corners until you get back to the chain three.
  2. Two double crochet in the same space, chain two, and attach to the top of the chain three.

Step Four

Change color if desired.

  1. Chain three, one double crochet, and chain two.
  2. Two double crochet in space, chain two.

Repeat all the way around.

Finish Corner

Finish the corner just like on the last round.

  1. Two double crochet, chain two
  2. Slip stitch into the top chain of the chain three.

Continue in Pattern
