Christmas crafts are a large part of the holiday season, whether they are created at school or at home. Many are keepsakes and wonderful additions to any Christmas decor. Turn your preschooler loose on these fun crafts and get some treasured keepsakes of your own.
Bead Wreath Ornament
This craft is great for practicing hand eye coordination, and makes a fun ornament for the tree when you are done.
Materials
- 20 gauge memory wire
- Jewelry pliers
- Green and red beads
- Pipe cleaners
Instructions
- Cut a piece of memory wire to approximately 6-inches in length.
- Bend one end of the wire over into a loop with the pliers so the beads don't slip off the other end.
- Have your preschooler thread the green and red beads in any pattern onto the wire until they fill it completely.
- Slide the loose end of the wire into the loop to close the wreath and bend the loose end over so it doesn't come apart.
- Let your preschooler twist a pipe cleaner into a bow and anchor it to the wreath with a second pipe cleaner wrapped around the bow's center, through the middle of the wreath.
- Hang from your tree with an ornament hook.
Puff Wreath
Green and red puffs are fantastic sensory objects that preschoolers love to touch. Glued in a circle, they make a fun wreath for hanging.
Materials
- Sheet of white paper or printed wreath pattern (shown at right)
- Red and green puffs
- Glue stick
Instructions
- Have your preschooler rub the glue stick on the paper in a large circle, or along the circles in the pattern if you're using it.
- Encourage them to stick the red and green puffs onto the glue so they form a circular wreath.
- Let the glue dry and hang.
Hand and Foot Rudolph
This fun Rudolph wall hanging is made from your child's hand and footprints. Keep it as a reminder of how small they once were.
Materials
- Construction paper
- Washable finger paint
- Red, white and black foam circles in different sizes
- Glue stick
Instructions
- Remove your child's shoes and socks.
- Pour the finger paint in a large puddle onto a flat surface.
- Set a sheet of construction paper right next to the paint.
- Have your child step in the paint with one foot and immediately press her foot to the center of the paper to leave a footprint behind. Clean off your child's foot.
- Have your child press both hands into the face paint, line up the heels of her hands with the toe area of the footprint and press both hands onto the paper to make "antlers".
- Select an approximately 1-inch red circle as Rudolph's nose and have your child glue it to the bottom of the footprint.
- Have your child glue small black circles on top of larger white ones for eyes and glue them to the appropriate area on the face.
- Allow the paint to dry.
Toilet Paper Roll Snowflake
This is a fun craft to make because just like real snowflakes, no two ever turn out the same. This craft will require the help of an adult to cut the toilet paper rolls into pieces.
Materials
- 3 - 4 toilet paper rolls per child
- Scissors
- Glue
- Paint, markers, glitter, or other decorative items (optional)
Instructions
- Have an adult cut the cardboard rolls into circles approximately 1-inch wide.
- Leave one circle round and help your child squeeze the other circles into oval shapes.
- Place the round circle on a flat surface and have your child glue the other pieces to the sides to make a 6-pointed snowflake. Each snowflake arm will ultimately have three to four pieces coming off it.
- Allow the glue to dry, and let your child paint or decorate the snowflake if desired.
