Quilting Machines

Today, time restraints often send quilters in search of the perfect quilting machine. They still love the craft, and they still desire the unique look that a quilt adds to a room, but they simply don't have the time to piece and stitch those quilts by hand. There are positives to using a quilting machine, however. For example:

  • Faster production
  • More control
  • Even stitches
  • Uniform blocks of material
  • Consistency

Used Quilting Machines

What are the benefits of used quilting machines? Obviously, buying a used machine will save you some money. In addition:

  • If you purchase a used quilting machine from an individual, she can show you the ins and outs of the machine. If you are a beginner, she may even offer to help you with your first product if she is a friend or acquaintance.
  • Sometimes sewing shops carry used machines that have been reconditioned. Here again, they can show you how to use the machine, maybe even offering a demonstration.
  • If the machine you purchase is only slightly used, the kinks may have already been worked out of it, and you may find that you get years of service for a much lesser price tag than a new machine would feature.

If you've never used a quilting machine, you may feel a little intimidated. Have no fear, however. Quilting machines are typically easy to use. Once you've gotten the hang of it, you may be able to crank out one or two quilts in a day!

Finding a Used Machine

Top of the line quilting machines can cost as much as $10,000, but these are typically purchased for use as part of a quilting business. Don't worry. There are much cheaper machines, and finding a used machine will save you even more money! Now, where can you find those machines?

  • Check your local fabric and hobby shops. There may also be sewing shops which deal solely in selling machines. If you can't find one there, ask the employees if they have a bulletin board that allows their customers to advertise used equipment. You may find just what you are looking for!
  • Check online auctions, such as eBay. Here you can set up an account and bid, just like a regular auction. You can read the descriptions of the products, and you can even contact the seller with additional questions. Be sure you pay attention to the seller's feedback score before you buy, and don't forget to add in your shipping costs before you submit your bid.

Additional Sites

There are numerous online stores that deal in used machines as well. The following list will get you started:

  • APQS: This is a comprehensive site that sometimes offers certified used and refurbished machines for sale as well as customer support, a chat forum, and supplies and accessories.
  • ABM International: This site offers single and multi-needle quilting machines, both new and used.
  • Nolting Longarm Machines: Nolting longarm machines are made in the U.S.A. The site offers information on upcoming classes and shows and sells used and new inventory.
